The Cave

I'm afraid this might not be new for Londoners - it was created in 2004 by one of Central Saint Martin's students, Sakura Adachi - but I have just discovered it and I thought it is fantastic! It just physically summarizes my feeling whenever I am reading a book, writing or doing anything on my own. Immersed on my own world. The idea of creating a bubble, a cave that both isolates and integrates you from the outside world can only amplify the whole experience of it.

Sakura Adachi got the idea by observing how people behave in public area; always trying to create their own space. I have noticed it since I got in London. I have even started to collect picture from individuals immersed on their own worlds. Here, I found public areas, be it parks, cafés, libraries or restaurants are packed with individuals doing their own business unaware of what is happening outside their moment of introspection. It cough my attention because Brazil is not a country where public areas are used by individuals on their own, it's often terrifying being by your own anywhere public there. It has nothing to do with criminality, if you have jumped to that conclusion; it has to do with a very strong cultural thing of collectiveness. People go out in groups of friends, they get hook up to dance together, take Samba, our most traditional music/dance, it is all about the group.

It is interesting to wonder about how people relate to the public space and how that can be so different anywhere in the world. Nevertheless, the contrast between public and private has been an endless debate. Interesting subject. And this cave has made me dive into that. Amazing trip...

Assunto interessante. E essa caverna me fez mergulhar nele. Que ótima viagem…
